About Niseko ski resort

While the mountain elevation of Niseko is only 1308 mtrs, the powder is guaranteed from the weather that hits Niseko from the vast cold tundra of Russia and northern China.

Niseko ski resort is a popular destination for skiers from around the world due to the great selection of Japanese and Western-style accommodation and because the mountain has very good English-speaking support for their international tourists.

Travelling to Niseko ski resort

If you are planning to go to Niseko ski resort for your next skiing or snowboarding holiday, the fastest way to get there is to go via the Chubu Centrair International Airport (Nagoya) then fly in on a domestic flight to the New Chitose Airport which is the main airport for Sapporo. Chubu Centrair International Airport handles both domestic and international flights so you don’t have to transfer from the international airport to a domestic one (as you would if you fly into Tokyo via the Narita International Airport.

Australian skiers and snowboarders should consider flying Jetstar as they fly directly to the Chubu Centrair International Airport.

Accommodation at Niseko ski resort

There is plenty of modern, Western style accommodation at Niseko. From apartments to hotel style pensions, you can find something for the size of your ski party. Note that hotel and pensions may be smaller than what you would find at home, but, hey, who wants to be in the hotel when you can be knee deep in powder. Alpen Ridge is right on the mountain (ski in, ski out) and has been recommended by several skiers who have loved this mountain resort.

You’re in a different country with its own culture so why not go for traditional Japanese style living. You’ll sleep the night away on a traditional Japanese futon and enjoy the minimalism of Japanese style.

Beware the icy paths

Be careful of the icy paths in the village. A word of warning from a skier that had a fall, not skiing the mountain, but in the village. Another victim of the icy footpaths. You can buy a pair of snow cleats to put over your boots to help prevent falls but it is something to be mindful of.
