Ski Mt Buller
About Mt Buller Ski Resort
Mt Buller is a ski mountain in Victoria that many Melbournites favour. It’s relatively close to Melbourne, has reliable snow (for Australian standards) and it is a great mountain to ski.
Mt Buller is also a pretty mountain resort. The resort itself is nestled into a bowl at the top of the mountain and ski runs of the main ski run, Bourke Street, takes off from the village up the mountain. Two other chairs take you to the summit. It boasts over 300 hectares of skiable terrain and there is great variety for all levels of skiers.
Getting to Mt Buller
The three-hour drive from Melbourne to Mt Buller is via the Hume Highway or the Maroondah Highway. Mansfield is the largest town closest to Buller but a little place called Merrijig which is closer to the ski resort and has motel accommodation for those wanting to save money by staying off the mountain. It’s about a 25 minute drive from Merrijig to Buller.
Best ski runs at Mt Buller
It’s all relative depending on skiing ability but the most popular easy run is Bourke Street which literally looks like its namesake in Melbourne with what looks like thousands of skiers and snowboarders navigating around each other. Another busy run is Wombats so if you want to avoid crowds, ski somewhere else. The summit has some steeper blue runs and good blacks and International (black) is a favourite.
What’s special at Mt Buller
For baby boomers, Mt Buller has a ‘buller boomer’ deal on lift tickets. If you are born before 1954, by a lift pass on any Wednesday or Thursday and ski the next day free. Boomers are retiring in droves so they can ski midweek so keep the boomer off the slopes on the weekends and get them skiing when everyone else is earning a quid. Great marketing.
