About Mt Hotham

Mt Hotham is a ski resort in Australia in the Victorian Alps. The second highest ski resort in Australia (after Charlotte’s Pass in New South Wales), it has seen a lot of real estate development over the past 15 years.

Mt Hotham is 1861 metres above sea level and consistently gets the most snow of any Victorian ski field.

Mount Hotham is often referred to as ‘the skiers’ mountain’ with over 40% of runs considered advanced. There are also less difficult runs for skiers and boarders – beginners (20%) to intermediates (40%).

Dinner Plain is just down the road with cross-country trails linking Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain. There are some 15 kilometres of cross-country ski trails.

One hour forty minutes down the mountain is the beautiful alpine town of Bright.

Travelling to Mt Hotham

Mt Hotham is 375 kilometres from Melbourne (4.5 hour drive) and just over 700 kilometres from Sydney (9 hours drive). Adelaide is 900 kilometres away (12 hour drive). National park fees need to be paid when driving to and staying at Mt Hotham.

Mt Hotham has an airport for light planes. Qantaslink flies Dash 8s to Mt Hotham airport which is about 20 kilometres from the resort. Transfers are available to the snow resort.

The closest regional airport is at Albury/Wodonga on the New South Wales, Victorian border – three hours drive along the Keiwa Valley Highway and  Great Alpine Road.

Coach travel is also available from Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney.

Where to stay at Mt Hotham

Apartments from bedsits to five bedders, shared lodges and hotel accommodation are just some of the options available from economy style to first-class options at Mt Hotham. Then there is Dinner Plain with transport between the two resorts making this a more economical option.

What’s best about Mt Hotham

It’s a skiers’ mountain with some really challenging runs but also enough for beginners to learn.

What’s worst?

Slalom Gully or what we sometimes call Slush Gully. Lots of runs feed into this area so it’s busy and, because it is perhaps the lowest point of the ski area, is often wet snow.
